Step 1: Cut the rafters
The first step is to cut the rafters for your pergola. You’ll need two rafters for each foot of width that you want your pergola to span. For example, if you want your pergola to span 10 feet, you’ll need 20 rafters.
Use a saw to cut the rafters to the desired length. If you’re not sure what length to make them, a good rule of thumb is to make them 1/3 longer than the width of your pergola. So, if you’re pergola is 10 feet wide, your rafters should be 13 feet long.
Step 2: Notch the rafters
